My name is Ken Owens, been skating since 1976. This is how it all started...
It was 1976 and a flat day at Surfside,Texas, and this wise old surfer dude pulled out an old Makaha or Jaws board to make the day interesting. WOW! My first exposure, and it was picture perfect...pretty girls, a lot of 'crete with a few banks, and great karma all around. It changed my life, that "flat" day and ensuing events, including my first ever look into a skateboarder magazine. Russ Howell totally blew me away! I soon moved back to the west Texas wastelands and took my board, and was thrilled to find my hometown was surrounded by ditches! The System,it was called, spawned some great memories,a few scars I still have 29 yrs. later, and friends "forever". Bent Cement skateboard park was built there in '78, skate equipment came of age,and the Zorlac crew tore us all a new one! It was a great time in HISTORY and Texas'Tall Tale lore, and I'm thrilled to find many of the same cats still skating in 2004. Thanks to MAS for a worthy addition to history!
