Why I SK8 / Richard Gleason / ska8vert@yahoo.com

I am a 45 year old Wall Street Exec. I was never as good as Cab or Stacy, but good enough for Sims,Pepsi, etc to pay me ( funny I make more in day than my whole skate career, if you want to call it a career). When my son turned 6 (5 years ago) he asked if I could teach him, I broke out the Pig Board (if you have to ask you are under 30) and went down to Vans. That was it. Now I skate almost every day.

The reason I skate is, I love it. Nothing even compares to skating vert. And as I learn how to "street skate" it is all about progression. Am I good? Yea actually I am. At 45 I can show up at any park an still get asked if I am
"sponsored" but that's not why I do it. I do it for my for kids to teach them a wonderful sport of self expression. I do it to meet the others kids parents and say "see, its ok to be a skater" When I make a positive impact on a child's life, that's why I skate. Learning a new trick is always the best... do you remember carving over the light in the pool? I could go on forever.

PS I hid the fact I skated at work, until one day I said "this is insane, if they want to judge you about skating vs. your ability in your career you can go do something else"

PSS When they found out, the up tights think I am cool. Now, they all want to tell me about when they were young...and loved to skate.

HEHEHEHEHEHEHE I love that part the most.

"hang on to sixteen as long as you can..."
